Yen-Yaw for me is a designation for which all of my struggles are to go. It is my pain, my providence, my healing, my damage. If I can do one Musical thing with my life worth remembering, it would be this first attempt at four albums with a similar theme.
The idea behind the albums is very “Beat” in an opportunity to it, but I decided to do away with those past sentiments of a generation already gone. It was all about experience and enlightenment, a kind of spiritual wanting. But I’m here for a spiritual “doing.” So I’m calling it “Hybrid,” for the sake of doing away with labels.
What type of Music is it?:
“Hybrid.”
Simple enough in-context. Take it as the next step: Third-stream meets Jazz Fusion meets Contemporary Classical meets Avant Garde meets Popular/Commercial.
Words to me are important in their context because they convey ideas. If this project is to convey any ideas, they will be put in form of words. Otherwise, there is a very John Cage-like approach to the whole thing, sound being the benefactor first, the listener being the overall goal. I intend to make Music on Music’s terms, but to take into account that Simplicity remarks itself with Artistry. By no means am I a complete artist in this regard, but the design here is to make my way there, to find my footing in a Musical and Literary community.
But that’s what I want to do as a composer.
As a Musician, I want to create a community, a forum really, for new Music. At the center of Yen-Yaw will be these compositions that I’ve created, but during live performances, what will be highlighted are the Musicians, in the Jazz sense, and not my compositions. Improvisation has always been a love of mine.
